Summer Community Service Project: Alex's Lemonade Stand
Dear patients and parents,
Several months ago, my 8 year old son Brandon and I went to lunch at Applebee’s. The kids’ menu that he received was devoted to the story of Alex’s Lemonade Stand. He was amazed how a 4 year old girl with cancer could raise over 1 million dollars for pediatric cancer research! Immediately, he wanted to host his own lemonade stand.
At that time, summer’s end was quickly approaching, and it was not a very appropriate time to have a lemonade stand. So, before we left the restaurant that day, I made a deal with Brandon. I told him that if he was really serious about hosting a lemonade stand, and donating all of the money, then he could host the stand at my office in the summer of 2008. And I also promised him that whatever donations he received at his stand, I would match with my own donation.
Now, to be honest with you, I thought that he would completely forget about the lemonade stand. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to have a lemonade stand at my office, but I wanted to make sure he was committed to the project. Well, Brandon certainly did not forget about it. About once a week for the last nine months he would mention how he was going to have the lemonade stand at the office.
So, summer is quickly approaching, and Brandon will host the stand at the office at various times throughout the summer. The dates and times are to be determined, and will likely be based on weather. After all, lemonade is very popular on hot days! So please be on the lookout for Brandon this summer, and I would greatly appreciate it if you would support his efforts. And yes, I will match his donations up to $1,000. All money received will be sent to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, which supports pediatric cancer research. To date, the foundation has raised over 18 million dollars! Thank you in advance for your support!
Sincerely,
Brian Loftus

During National Orthodontic Health Month in October and Children?s National Dental Health Month in February, Dr. Loftus visits local elementary schools and gives a dental health presentation to second or third graders. The program includes what happens at the dentist, foods you should eat and what might happen at their first orthodontic appointment. Folders are given to each student containing information on the American Associations of Orthodontist?s recommendations for a child?s first visit to the orthodontist as well as coloring and educational pages for the students. Each student also receives a dental health kit.

Fall Community Project Update
This year's fall community project at the office was knitting or crocheting lap blankets for Praxis, an Alzheimer?s Facility, in Easton. All total, we were able to present Kevin at Praxis with 10 blankets. We want to thank all patients who contributed either by donation of yarn or making squares for us. Several staff members then put the squares together to make the blankets.

Fall Community Service Project: Lap Robes
Lap Robes This years project is a little different. We are asking people to make 7" x 9" knitted or crocheted squares with leftover yarn. We will then sew the squares together for small lap robes to be used by local shelters and nursing home facilities. Some of the organizations interested are: Easton Nursing Home, The Phoebe Home, Praxis, Manor Care, New Eastwood Center, and Safe Harbour.
Instructions will be available in the office. We will also have some needles and yarn here so you can work on them while you are in our reception area.
Going to the Orthodontist by Rebecca Morris
We would like to congratulate Miss Rebecca Morris for her book Going to the Orthodontist. A copy is in the waiting room for everyone to enjoy.
Rebecca Morris is 8 years old and in 2nd grade at Holy Family School. Rebecca wrote her first book, Zoo Farm, for the Nazareth Library Young Authors Contest when she was in kindergarten. She chose the topic for her second book, Going to the Orthodontist, as a way to share with others her excitement about one day getting braces. She is currently working on her first chapter book, My Amazing Family. Along with writing, Rebecca also enjoys reading, gymnastics, and playing piano. She lives in Forks Township with her parents, younger sister, and two little brothers.
